Most towns this size don't have a Route 66 landmark and a hand-built castle. Glendora has both.
The original Route 66 — the Mother Road — runs straight through Glendora, and a couple of the town's best-known sights sit right along it. It makes an easy half-day: start with the most famous donut in the San Gabriel Valley, then go see one of the strangest, most wonderful buildings in California.
Breakfast on the Mother Road
Begin at The Donut Man, on Glendora's stretch of Route 66 since 1972 and open 24 hours. The seasonal fresh strawberry and peach donuts are the draw — genuinely famous, genuinely worth the line. Get your coffee, get your donut, and you've started the day the right way.
From there, Route 66 itself is the attraction. Follow it and you're driving a piece of American history that once carried travelers from Chicago to the coast — classic signage, old storefronts, and that particular mid-century roadside feeling that's getting rarer every year.
Built by hand, from river rock and salvage, over more than twenty years — and it's on the National Register.
Rubel Castle
The centerpiece is Rubel Castle, a folk-art castle in the foothills that a young Michael Rubel began building by hand from river rock, concrete and salvaged materials, and kept building for more than two decades. It's now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and there's genuinely nothing else like it — towers, walls and courtyards assembled from the odds and ends of Glendora's citrus-era past.
Tours run by appointment through the Glendora Historical Society, so this is one to plan rather than drop in on. Book ahead for the dates you're here — it's the most memorable couple of hours in town.
Make an afternoon of it
If you'd like more, the Citrus College campus nearby is home to the Haugh Performing Arts Center, a 1,400-seat hall with a full season of concerts and theatre — worth checking if you want an evening out. Then it's a short drive home, where the pool and the fire pits are waiting.
